Atomic EduThe Two-Minute Argument
Students pick a silly but genuine debate topic — pineapple on pizza, homework should be banned, cats are better than dogs. They have two minutes to build the strongest case they can, then present it. The twist: after presenting, they have to argue the opposite side. The skill is recognising that good thinking means understanding both sides, not just winning.
How it works

Brainstorm 5–10 silly debate topics on the board. Have students vote on their favourites or pick from a hat.

Pair students up. Each pair picks a topic and decides who's arguing 'yes' first.

Give 2 minutes of silent prep. Then 1 minute to present their case.

Swap sides. Same 2-minute prep, 1-minute present — but they have to argue the opposite of what they just said.

Whole-class debrief: which side was harder to argue? Why?
Teacher Tip
Watch for the student who light up when they have to flip sides — that's the thinking move you want to name out loud.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
Use very concrete topics (recess food, favourite season). Allow them to draw their argument as a picture before speaking.
Grade 5
Add a 'one specific reason' rule — they have to back up their position with at least one real-world example.
Grade 6
Introduce the term 'counter-argument' explicitly and ask students to name one strong point on the OTHER side before they argue their own.
Grade 7
Topics can move to school policy (uniforms, phone bans). Require evidence — a stat, an anecdote, or a precedent.
Grade 8
Pair them with someone they usually disagree with. Add a third round where they argue a position they actually believe — but using only the other side's logic.
Debrief question
When was it easier to argue — when you actually believed your side, or when you didn't? What does that tell you?
