Freeze Frame

Collaboration under pressure is what film crews, surgical teams, and emergency responders do every day. When the director calls "cut," everyone adjusts instantly — no argument, no hesitation.

Overview

Students work in groups of four to create a series of frozen dramatic images in response to scenario cards. Each group has 60 seconds to arrange themselves into a freeze that tells a story. The skill is reading your teammates and making a decision together — fast.

Materials

None. A cleared space in the classroom or gymnasium.

Three-Part Lesson

Minds On (10 min)

Teacher calls out an emotion — "surprised," "proud," "disappointed" — and students freeze individually in a pose that shows it. After three rounds, pairs freeze together showing a relationship: "two friends who disagree," "a coach and a player after a loss." Debrief: what made some freezes clearer than others?

Action (25 min)

Groups of four receive a scenario card face-down. On "go," they flip the card, have 60 seconds to plan — no practice run — and then freeze on "freeze." Scenarios include:

  • A team that just won something they didn't expect to
  • Four people discovering something strange
  • A group trying to move something very heavy, very carefully
  • People waiting for news they're nervous about

Teacher circulates and calls "freeze" after 60 seconds. Each group holds for 10 seconds while the class reads the image silently. One student from the audience names what they see — not what they think the scenario was, but what the image communicated. After all groups have gone, groups rotate scenarios and repeat once.

Consolidation (10 min)

Whole class debrief. Three questions:

  • What did you have to pay attention to in your group to make the freeze work?
  • When did you change your plan because of what a teammate did?
  • What does that kind of listening look like outside drama class?

Observation Prompts

  • Which students take a position and hold it? Which students wait to see what others do first?
  • Who adjusts naturally? Who stays committed to their own idea even when it conflicts with the group?
  • Flag: students who opt out physically — standing upright while the group freezes — may need a scaffolded role.

Differentiation

  • Scaffolded: Provide a visual reference card with sample poses and emotions — reduces the blank-slate freeze.
  • Standard: Scenario cards as written.
  • Extension: Groups create a three-frame sequence — freeze 1, transition, freeze 2 — showing a change over time.

The Call

Sports coaches, air traffic controllers, and paramedics communicate under pressure constantly. The difference between a good call and a missed one is often clarity — not volume.

Overview

A modified tag game where one student is the "caller" for their team — they can't move, but they direct teammates using only verbal instructions. Teams rotate the caller role every two minutes. The skill is giving clear, timely, useful communication — not just talking.

Materials

Pinnies or coloured bands to identify teams (optional). A gymnasium or large outdoor space.

Three-Part Lesson

Minds On (8 min)

Partner activity: one partner is blindfolded (or closes eyes), the other gives verbal directions to guide them to a target on the floor — a cone, a spot marker, a line. Switch. Debrief: what words actually helped? What was confusing?

Action (30 min)

Teams of five play a modified tag game. One player per team is the designated Caller — they stand at a fixed point outside the play area and cannot move. Their job is to direct their four teammates: who to tag, who to avoid, where to move.

Rules:

  • The Caller can only speak — no pointing, no gesturing.
  • Teammates must respond visibly to what the Caller says.
  • Every two minutes, a new player becomes the Caller.

Run three full rounds so every student has a turn as Caller.

Consolidation (7 min)

Students sit in their teams. Each team answers: what was the hardest part of being the Caller? What did your best Caller do that the others didn't? Share one answer per team with the class.

Differentiation

  • Scaffolded: Caller is given a printed reference card with direction words and simple phrases to use.
  • Standard: As written.
  • Extension: Caller must give instructions one move in advance — "in three seconds, move left" — testing planning under pressure.

Students read a short text about the monarch butterfly's multi-generational migration, then identify causes and effects from the reading using evidence. The skill is weighing evidence before locking in an answer — not guessing.

Three-Part Lesson

Minds On (8 min)

Show a 60-second clip of a monarch swarm. Pair-share: name one thing you noticed and one thing you wondered. Capture 3-4 wonderings on the board.

Action (30 min)

Students read the monarch passage with a partner. They highlight one cause in one colour, one effect in another. Then they discuss: which one feels most certain to them, and which one feels like a guess? Why?

Consolidation (7 min)

Quick whip-around: each student names one cause and one effect, and rates their confidence 1-4. The numbers go on the board and the class looks for patterns — where did most people feel certain? Where did most people guess?

Differentiation

  • Scaffolded: Provide a graphic organiser pre-labelled CAUSE → EFFECT with sentence frames.
  • Standard: As written.
  • Extension: Students propose a second possible cause for one effect and weigh which is more likely.

Designers, architects, and brand strategists work within constraints every day. A logo that works in one colour. A space built for one material. The constraint is not the obstacle — it is the brief.

Overview

Students choose one colour and create a composition using only that colour — varied through tint, tone, and shade by mixing with white, grey, and black. The challenge is creating visual interest, depth, and emotion without the tool most students rely on: colour variety.

Materials

One colour of tempera or acrylic paint per student (student chooses), plus white, black, and grey. Heavy paper or canvas board. Brushes.

Three-Part Lesson

Minds On (10 min)

Show three examples of monochromatic art — one painting, one photograph, one graphic design piece. Students write two observations about each: what they notice, and what emotion or feeling the work creates. Brief share — what do these three things have in common despite being so different?

Action (35 min)

Students mix at least five distinct values of their chosen colour before touching the paper — a tint progression from near-white to near-black through their colour. Then they plan and execute a composition using only those values. Teacher checkpoint at 15 minutes: students hold up their value scale and point to which values they've used so far. Redirect students who are using only two or three values.

Consolidation (10 min)

Gallery walk — works in progress displayed on desks. Students leave one written observation on a sticky note for three different pieces: not "I like it" — one specific observation about how the artist used value to create depth or contrast.

Differentiation

  • Scaffolded: Pre-mixed value scale provided; student focuses on composition only.
  • Standard: As written.
  • Extension: Student writes a one-paragraph artist statement explaining the emotional intent of their colour choice and how their value decisions support it.

Personal trainers, athletes, and anyone who has learned a skill on their own knows this: the plan is not the goal. Adjusting the plan is the skill. Every professional who keeps improving after school ends has learned to direct their own learning.

Overview

Students design a four-week personal fitness or wellness plan for the last month of school. They identify one specific goal, choose three weekly actions to work toward it, and build in a weekly self-check. The lesson teaches the planning process — not a specific exercise routine.

Materials

Planning template (generated worksheet), pencils.

Three-Part Lesson

Minds On (10 min)

Think-pair-share: name one thing you got better at this year — in school or outside it. What did you actually do to get better? Did you have a plan, or did it happen by accident? Brief class discussion: what's the difference between improvement that happens and improvement you make happen?

Action (30 min)

Students complete their four-week plan using the worksheet. The plan has four components:

  1. My goal — one specific, measurable statement ("I want to be able to run for 10 minutes without stopping by June 25").
  2. My three weekly actions — what I will do, when, and for how long.
  3. My self-check question — one question I'll ask myself each Friday ("Did I do all three this week? If not, why not?").
  4. My adjustment plan — what I'll change if the plan isn't working after week two.

Teacher circulates and conferences briefly with each student. Key coaching question: "Is your goal specific enough that you'll know for sure on June 25 whether you reached it?"

Consolidation (5 min)

Students share one goal with a partner — not for feedback, just for accountability. Partner writes the goal on a sticky note and keeps it. They'll return it on June 25.

Differentiation

  • Scaffolded: Goal and action fields are partially pre-filled with examples — student selects and adjusts rather than creating from scratch.
  • Standard: As written.
  • Extension: Student adds a reflection column to their weekly plan — writing two sentences at the end of each week about what they learned about themselves as a learner, not just whether they hit the target.
