Day 2 · Collaboration

The Silent Blueprint

Teams of 4 must build the tallest possible freestanding structure using only paper and tape — but nobody is allowed to talk. All communication happens through gestures, pointing, and eye contact. Debrief: what did you learn about your team when words were taken away?

25–30 minutes Materials: Paper (newsprint or recycled), masking tape, scissors. Per team of 4: 20 sheets of paper, 1 roll of tape.

How it works

  1. 1

Form teams of 4. Hand out materials. Explain: tallest freestanding tower wins. No talking, no writing, no whispering.

  2. 2

Give 15 minutes to build. You enforce the silence — one warning, then the team has to start over.

  3. 3

Measure each tower. Award the winners with a goofy made-up title ('Architects of the Quiet Quarter').

  4. 4

Debrief in a circle: who became the leader without speaking? How did you make decisions?

  5. 5

Optional: rebuild in 5 minutes — this time you CAN talk. Compare what changed.

Teacher Tip

The student who usually dominates verbal group work often gets quiet here. Make sure to name that shift in the debrief.

Adapt it for your grade

Grade 4

Allow soft sounds (humming, clapping). Keep teams to 3 students. Use pasta and marshmallows instead of paper if available.

Grade 5

Strict silence rule. Add a 'must use every piece of paper' constraint to force collaboration.

Grade 6

After build #1, swap one team member into a different team for build #2 — same silence rule. Discuss what changed.

Grade 7

Add a budget: 10 sheets of paper instead of 20. Forces more thinking, less brute force.

Grade 8

Run two rounds: round 1 silent, round 2 with full communication. Debrief: was the talking round actually faster? Or just louder?

Debrief question

What's one thing you noticed about how your team works that you'd never have noticed if you could talk?
