Atomic EduThe 30-Second Brief
Each student picks a topic they know well — a video game, a sport, a hobby, a show. They have to explain it clearly to someone who knows absolutely nothing about it, in exactly 30 seconds. Listeners score them on clarity, not content. The skill is precision — saying exactly what you mean with no wasted words.
How it works

Each student writes their topic on an index card. Give 3 minutes of silent prep — they jot down 3 key things their listener needs to know.

Pair them with someone who they think won't know their topic. (You can shuffle, or let them choose.)

Speaker has 30 seconds. Strict timer. Listener listens silently.

Listener gives a 1–10 clarity score and one piece of feedback: 'I still don't understand ___' or 'You explained ___ really well.'
- 5
Swap roles. New topic. Repeat.
Teacher Tip
If a student says 'this is impossible,' that's the moment they're learning. Don't extend the time — that's where the skill lives.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
Allow 60 seconds. Topics should be very concrete (a game they play at recess, a TV show).
Grade 5
30 seconds. Give them a 'no jargon' rule — they can't use words a 5-year-old wouldn't know.
Grade 6
Add a constraint: the listener has to be able to explain it BACK to a third person in 15 seconds. Pressure tests true comprehension.
Grade 7
Topics must come from outside the classroom (hobby, job, family tradition). 30 seconds, no notes during the actual brief.
Grade 8
Run it as a chain: A explains to B, B explains the same thing to C, C explains to D. Compare A's version to D's. What got lost?
