Students pick something ordinary — a classroom rule, a school tradition, a familiar assignment — and redesign it to be better. The constraint: it has to be genuinely better, not just different. They have to explain what problem they solved and why their version works.
How it works

Brainstorm 5–10 ordinary things to remix. Pick from school: a homework policy, a seating arrangement, the lunch line, recess rules.

Each student picks one. 5 minutes silent thinking: what problem does the current version have?

10 minutes: sketch or write their redesign. Must answer: what's the problem? what's the fix? why is the fix actually better?

Quick gallery: each student shares for 30 seconds. Class can vote 'I'd actually want this.'

Optional: the winning remix gets pitched to the principal at the end of the week.
Teacher Tip
Watch for the student who picks something genuinely broken and offers something genuinely real. That's the kid who will redesign the world someday — name it.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
Pick from a short list of 3 things. Drawing is fine in place of writing.
Grade 5
Add a 'one minute' rule — they have to explain their fix in 60 seconds. Forces clarity.
Grade 6
Add a 'who pushes back?' question — who in the school would resist this change, and how would you respond?
Grade 7
Require a cost/feasibility note. Could this actually be done? With what?
Grade 8
Pitch format: 2 minutes per student, Q&A from peers. Class votes on the most actionable remix.
