Atomic EduThe Teach-Back
Pair students up. One person has five minutes to teach the other something — anything from this year's curriculum, anything they know well. The listener then teaches it to a third person from memory. How much survived the transfer? What got lost? What does that tell you about how well the first person actually explained it?
How it works

Each student picks something they could teach in 5 minutes — a math concept, a historical event, a sports rule, a recipe.

Pair up. Student A teaches Student B (5 minutes). B can ask questions.

Form groups of 3 by combining pairs. B now teaches Student C what A just taught them. C cannot have heard the original lesson.

C reports back to A: 'Here's what I learned.' A grades the fidelity: 1–10. What got lost?

Swap roles. Repeat.
Teacher Tip
The grader (A) often discovers their own explanation was the weak link, not the messenger. Name this in the debrief.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
Simplify: A teaches B a game. B teaches C. C tries to play it. Did the rules survive?
Grade 5
Topic must come from this year's curriculum. 3-minute teach, 2-minute relay.
Grade 6
Add a 'visual aid' rule — A draws something while teaching. B has to recreate it from memory for C.
Grade 7
After the relay, A and C compare notes. Where did the meaning shift? Was it B's fault or A's original explanation?
Grade 8
Add a fourth person: C teaches D. Track how many sentences survive 3 hops. Most don't. Discuss why this matters in real life (gossip, rumours, news).
Debrief question
When something you taught didn't survive the transfer, was it because the listener missed it — or because YOU didn't explain it well enough?
