Atomic EduThe Role Rotation
A group challenge where every five minutes leadership rotates to a different person. The current leader makes all final decisions. Everyone else has to support the decision even if they disagree — then debrief after. What happened when leadership changed? What made a good leader in this group?
How it works

Form groups of 4. Pose the problem. Tell them: every 5 minutes I'll point at a new leader. The leader makes ALL final calls. The rest support.

Start the timer. After 5 minutes, rotate. (Don't pick by skill — random or alphabetical so introverts get a turn.)

Run 4 rotations so everyone leads once. (Total 20 minutes of work.)

Group discussion (5 min): which leader's decisions are still in your final plan? Which got reversed when leadership changed?

Whole class share: what does it actually feel like to follow a leader you disagree with?
Teacher Tip
The 'support even if you disagree' rule is the real lesson. Make sure to call it out by name — that's a workplace skill they'll use forever.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
3-minute rotations. Use a fun shared problem (plan the class party).
Grade 5
5-minute rotations. Provide a simple problem with clear constraints.
Grade 6
5-minute rotations. Add the constraint that the leader CANNOT veto an idea — they can only build on what was suggested.
Grade 7
5-minute rotations. After each leader's turn, that leader has to publicly hand off: 'Here's where we are, here's what's open.' Teaches transitions.
Grade 8
Same as 7, plus a 'silent supporter' role — one student per round can't speak. They have to show support through actions, notes, or body language. Tests followership too.
