Present students with three short arguments — one strong, one weak, one that sounds good but has a hidden problem. Their job is to find the flaw in each one. Make the arguments funny and relatable — about school rules, about food, about pop culture. The skill is noticing when reasoning doesn't actually hold up.
How it works

Read all three arguments aloud (or hand them out on the worksheet). Read them with conviction — don't telegraph which is which.

Students work alone for 5 minutes. They score each argument 1 (weak) to 5 (strong) and write ONE specific flaw they noticed.

Pair-share: do you agree on which is strongest?

Whole class: vote on the rankings. Then reveal which one has the hidden problem.

Discuss: how did the 'hidden problem' argument trick people? What did it use to sound convincing?
Teacher Tip
The 'hidden problem' argument is the gold. That's where students learn that sounding right and being right are different things.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
Use 2 arguments, not 3. Make the topics very concrete (recess rules).
Grade 5
3 arguments, but the 'hidden problem' is fairly obvious. Build confidence first.
Grade 6
Introduce one logical fallacy name (e.g. 'false cause'). See if students can spot it.
Grade 7
Use real arguments — from headlines, ads, or political ads. Discuss WHO writes them this way and WHY.
Grade 8
Students write their OWN 'sounds good but flawed' argument. Pass them around. Class hunts for the flaws.
