Atomic EduThe Ripple Map
Students pick one small everyday decision — what they ate for breakfast, what they're wearing, what device they used this morning. They map the ripple: where did it come from, who made it, what did it cost, what happened after. Visual, creative, genuinely surprising.
How it works
- 1
Each student picks ONE everyday object or decision from their morning. Concrete and specific (the exact cereal, the exact phone).
- 2
On their paper, they write their item in the centre, circle it.
- 3
Draw arrows outward: where did it come from? Who made it? What did it cost? Where did the packaging go after?
- 4
Keep going. Each new node sprouts more arrows. They have 15 minutes — push them to keep extending.
- 5
Gallery walk. Students leave one sticky note on someone else's map saying 'I didn't know ___.'
Teacher Tip
The breakthrough moment is when a student realizes their breakfast involves 5 different countries. Don't rush past it.
Adapt it for your grade
Grade 4
Use one of two pre-chosen items (a banana, a toothbrush). Provide a starting fact for each.
Grade 5
Let them choose, but the map needs at least 6 nodes. Provide a research helper sheet.
Grade 6
Add an environmental cost node — water, fuel, packaging waste.
Grade 7
Pair them up. Each pair compares two items: which has the bigger ripple? Why?
Grade 8
Add a 'one change' node — if you could redesign this product to be better for people OR the planet, what's the smallest meaningful change?
Debrief question
